A Colposcopy is a simple, painless, 10- to 15-minute procedure performed in a gynecologist’s office. Acetic acid (such as common table vinegar) is placed on the cervix and then viewed through a colposcope, an electric microscope with a bright light on the end of it. Tissue samples, or biopsies, are taken from any abnormal areas and sent to the lab for further evaluation. Colposcopy are normally preformed due to dysplasia or abnormal pap smear results after a routine annual exam.
